Garden Design Process
From your Ideas to a Garden that Feels like Yours
A garden transformation is a big investment in your home, but it’s also much more personal than that.
This is the space where you’ll spend Summer evenings, entertain friends, watch children grow, enjoy a quiet coffee, celebrate with family or simply look out of the window and feel good about what you see.
Our design process starts by understanding your vision for that space - and then working out how to bring it to life beautifully, practically and within the realities of your garden.
Your Initial Garden Visit
It Starts With Your Vision
Our first visit isn't about arriving with a catalogue of patios and asking you to choose one.
We want to understand what you imagine your garden becoming.
We’ll walk the garden with you and talk about how you’d love to use it, how you want it to feel and what would make the biggest difference to the way you live at home.
Perhaps you picture long summer lunches around a big table, somewhere beautiful to entertain friends, a quiet place to escape at the end of the day, more privacy, space for the children, a garden full of planting - or simply opening the doors and finally feeling that the outside belongs with the house.
You don't need to arrive with all the answers.
Bring us your ideas, frustrations, wish list and even the things you're not quite sure about yet. We'll explore the possibilities with you and start shaping those thoughts into a garden that can really work.
We want to understand not just what you want us to build, but what you want your new garden to give you.
Turning Your Ideas Into a Clear Brief
After the visit, we bring everything we've discussed together into your Client Brief.
It captures the vision for the garden alongside the important practical requirements - how you want to use the space, the features that matter to you, the feeling you're trying to create and the challenges the design needs to solve.
We send it back to you to review and approve before we start designing.
It's an important stage because this is where your conversations and ideas start becoming a real project.
Bringing Your Garden to Life on Paper
Once the Client Brief is agreed, we move into the paid garden design stage.
This is where your ideas begin to take shape.
John develops a hand-drawn colour design that brings the different elements of the garden together - not as a collection of individual features, but as one considered space.
Patios, planting, pathways, entertaining areas, pergolas, privacy, lawns, structures and garden features are positioned in relation to one another and to your home.
For the first time, you can begin to see the garden you've been imagining.
Refining it Together
Seeing the design on paper often makes everything feel much more real.
You’ll have the opportunity to sit with the design, imagine yourselves using the space and talk through any agreed changes before it is finalised.
This part of the process isn't about presenting you with a drawing and saying, “That's your garden.”
It is about making sure the design feels right for you before we start talking about building it.
If the project changes substantially from the brief originally agreed, we'll discuss any additional design work with you before continuing.
From Design to Finished Garden
Once you love the design and approve it, we have a clear vision to build from.
We can then properly cost the landscaping work, consider materials and construction requirements and, for larger projects, move into your detailed Project Plan.
The drawing that began with a conversation in your garden becomes the plan our landscaping team uses to bring it to life.
